TODAY'S MOST URGENT TASK FOR EVERYONE.... I NEED YOU TO CONFIRM YOUR AVAILABILITY .
This link will take you directly to the grid. Please find your name and check your YES's and NO's from right to left. Pay particular attention to item highlighted in YELLOW. Those are questions. If you get an 'Access Denied' or 'Request Access' pop up, just request access. I get those requests fairly quickly and will give it to you. If it directs you to sign into your gmail account, yes. Please do. This is a google limitation to people who don't have gmail accounts. But, requesting access thwarts the big G. |

TODAY'S QUOTE or MOMENTLAURA ROSS WOLCOTT...
From March 24, 1869 article in the Milwaukee Daily News, "The woman suffrage convention held in Milwaukee took the people of that beautiful city wholly by surprise. They seemed to have settled down into the belief that they were secure from an invasion of the “strong-minded” and were wholly unprepared for the brilliant coup d’etat which the woman suffrage advocates sprung upon them two weeks ago. “What?” said a staid, dignified elderly gentleman, “has the woman suffrage fuss got here? I declare I never expected that. I knew it had reached everywhere else, but I never thought it would get here!” Thus utterly surprised, they surrendered unconditionally. The convention was one of the most successful ever held." The Milwaukee Daily News also reprinted a letter detailing the convention that had been written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Mrs. Stanton declared that “Mr. and Miss Peckham and Dr. Laura J. Ross” “were the ruling spirits of the convention.” PREVIOUS QUOTESdickey chappelle

These prep tasks are on the master checklist document in order of importance. Start at the top of your list and check the items off as you accomplish them. They are written in general terms for everyone. If your specifics diverge from this general guidance and you and Susan have already agreed, that’s still the case.
Stuck? Don’t get hung up on a list. It’s here to help but not to hinder. Again, it’s not a rite of passage. Email or call SUSAN and she will help you cut through the haze and facilitate what’s next.

Answer to question 0
where are our dressing rooms?
Dressing rooms and space to store personal belongings is in the Halls of History, located on the right just past the main office. Look for the building with the covered portico.
Our parking area in the maintenance lot is also on the back side of the HofH and there is a door from that lot into the building. That will be our access door.
You're welcome to bring any items you like on hand when you're prepping and leave them there during the show. We don't assume responsibility for your personal items but the doors will be locked at all times.

The tour route is one mile in length. It will take 70-75 minutes to make the circuit.
where can i stow personal items?
The Halls of History is the exclusive territory of Caper Company cast and crew. The Halls of History are locked at all times and there will be a Caper Company crew member located there to let you in and out as needed.
Where are the bathrooms out on site?
There will be several portable restrooms on the tour route for our on site characters. Look for the yellow cocktail glass icons on our map.
There will be a portable restroom by the Victorian Gardens, where guests gather.
The Halls of History have two restrooms also.
(Below are the locations in 2022. They are being updated for 2023.)

when are the tours and how frequently do they go out?
Tours step off every 15 minutes so on site characters can expect to see another group every 15 minutes. If a group is running fast or slow, one of our on site stage managers will try to get them back on track.
i'm a guide. where do i start?
Susan will be calling the show from the black tent by the Victorian Gardens. Five minutes before your first tour, she will radio the Halls of History to send you out. Take your lantern and check in at the tent. At your tour time, Susan will send you in to be introduced by your host and to pick up your tour group.
Note: If you prefer to mingle with the guests prior to the tour, you are welcome to do so after you check in at the black tent. Pay attention to what's going on around you so you are ready when it's time to be introduced to your specific tour group.
At the start of your tour time, you'll gather on the end of the gardens near the arbor, be introduced by Lydia Docenia Ely and lead your guests from there.
PLEASE ALWAYS CHECK IN AT THE BLACK TENT FIRST. Susan is calling the show from there and will not release the tour to begin unless she knows you're in place.

will it be cold? how can i get warm on site?
Yes. It can get cold. All stationary and roving characters are on site the entire night so there are 4 black tents with side walls and chairs for you to warm up in between tour groups. All of the tents are positioned so they are out of sightlines of the guests. These are for our exclusive use. Look on the map for the black tent icons for locations.
Hand warmers will be available in the Halls of History. Take them. Use them.
Your costume will be constructed so you can layer on warmth. Anyone who wants long johns or other warm wear, let Deb, your costumer, know so we can acquire them.
(Below is a general description of their locations from 2022. This will be updated for 2023)

I'm a Guide. How do I find the tour route?
The route will be marked with lanterns on shepherd's crooks. You will have to remember two things in addition to following the lanterns.
1. After your first stop at Newhall that you double back to pick up the route.
2. Kilbourn, Civil War tableau and Gillespie are all on the same road. Stay to the right to visit Kilbourn first, tableau second and then double back to visit Gillespie.

I'm a roving character. where do i join the walk and where do i end?
Roving characters have a length of real estate from points A to B and may choose to jump in anywhere along that stretch. Once you join the group, stop, deliver and jump out before the next stop - although it can be near it.
ETHOS
Spirits of the Silent City is a collaborative creation. Unlike some creative endeavors however, the onus is on you, the actor, to pro-actively check everything off your list – to co-craft your script – to initiate scheduling your rehearsals – and all that jazz.
That said, you have lots of support. Your crew and fellow cast members are here for you. Seriously. This is not a rite of passage. You will succeed and be glorious. It's also not that hard if you just take each to-do one at a time.

There’s nothing like first-hand experience. If you’re interested in teaming up with an SotSC 2022 cast member as a mentor, chime in. SUSAN will be happy to make the connections.

MORE ABOUT WHAT YOUR STAGE MANAGERS CAN AND DO DO FOR YOU
KEEP THE TOURS RUNNING ON TIME AND TO SPEED
Each stage manager and tech person monitors when each group arrives and leaves all 12 on site locations. If there is any chance one group will lap the one in front of it, they will slow you down. Or speed you up. We're working on best ways to convey 'speed up' and 'slow down' messages to guides.
ACTOR TRANSPORTATION
If you need a little golf cart boost to get you to your on site location, connect with Este. She will see how we can work it.

Creating your script is a collaborative process.
- Research your character. Pay attention to aspects of their lives that are ‘sticky’ to you. Those may become your unfinished business.
- Schedule time with RON. Phone, zoom, in person.
- Ron will create a script based on your conversation and email it to you.
- As soon as you receive your email, schedule your next conversation with Ron.
- Note: Your final script will be crafted so you can memorize it as is. It can also be a jumping off point for you to improv or craft your actual interactions based on your guest’s experiences. It’s up to you and your improv skills.
- Learn your script. Learn your dates, numbers and specific talking points.
Schedule (at least) THREE one-on-one, on-site rehearsals on Saturdays or Sundays between September 16th and October 14th with RON

In addition to getting to know your personal historical character, everyone will interact with other characters. To create authentic connections, you need to learn who they are.
This may be a challenge to accomplish since Tech Rehearsal on Tuesday, October 17th and Final Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, October 18th may be the first time you will meet many of your fellows in person. To help bridge this, familiarize yourself with the resources we have online in your cast portal page.

We will costume you. Connect with DEB to discuss your character and provide measurements.
A couple considerations....
You may work with Deb on items you’d like to incorporate but do not costume yourself. Anything you wear needs her final approval.
It can get very cold and you may be outdoors for hours. Deb will design your costume to be layered for warmth. If you aren't warm enough, ask Deb about long johns. We might be able to get some for you.

Drive in the cemetery side gate on Forest Home Avenue, make your first - immediate left and drive in to the maintenance lot. That's us.
If you drive in the main gate on Lincoln Avenue, drive past the Halls of History and make your first right hand turn. That will also take you to the maintenance lot.
