10-22-23...
Thank you all for a memorable run. There were so many heartfelt moments...
The little girl who told her Mom after meeting Mathilde Anneke, "I want to grow up to be just like her."
The guest returning to Vic Gardens tapping Lydia Docenia Ely on the shoulder to say, "Thank you for all you did for our soldiers. You have no idea how much you've done and how much we appreciate it."
The gentleman who stepped to the back of the tour to shake Clementina Castro's hand and tell her, "Thank you so much for bring Clementina Castro to life. I had no idea she would be here on the tour. She's so important and we talk about her all of the time," and then went on to introduce himself as the President and CEO of LaCausa.
The boy to Increase Lapham, "You're my favorite scientist!"
The family who interred their mother that morning then bought 10 tickets for that night and had an amazing time thanks in large part to Beulah Brinton, "Oh, yes! Your mother! Lovely woman. Well, don't worry, I'll make sure she makes it to all the meetings and is introduced to all the best people," to which they responded with their deepest thanks.
And those are just some of the ones I heard about.
On behalf of Ron, Este, Alex, Matt, Captain, Deb, Juli and myself, Thank You.

STRAIGHT TO THE DAILY SCHEDULES?
HOW OUR CAST OF CHARACTERS CHANGED THE WORLD
BEULAH BRINTONAbout Mrs. Brinton
Quoted from the Milwaukee Journal, August 1924 “Sometimes as she read to us, she would look up from the page to tell about the wonderful things she believed would come about in the world of science in our lifetime. We thought of these as fairy tales, but they all happened as she had prophesied. She was a century ahead of her time.” |
EARLIER FEATURED CHARACTERSdickey chappelle
“[On war:] It's not a woman's place. There's no question about it. There's only one other species on earth for whom a war zone is no place, and that's men.” Dickey Chappelle Marcia P Coggs
"You cannot legislate the heart, but you can legislate laws. My mission is to work for social change. Period. When I say social change, that is self-explanatory - human needs." Billy mitchell
"Progress is never accepted by everybody." dr. laura ross wolcott
The Milwaukee Daily News also reprinted a letter detailing the convention that had been written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Mrs. Stanton declared that “Mr. and Miss Peckham and Dr. Laura J. Ross” “were the ruling spirits of the convention.” LAURA ROSS WOLCOTT... From March 24, 1869 article in the Milwaukee Daily News, "The woman suffrage convention held in Milwaukee took the people of that beautiful city wholly by surprise. They seemed to have settled down into the belief that they were secure from an invasion of the “strong-minded” and were wholly unprepared for the brilliant coup d’etat which the woman suffrage advocates sprung upon them two weeks ago. “What?” said a staid, dignified elderly gentleman, “has the woman suffrage fuss got here? I declare I never expected that. I knew it had reached everywhere else, but I never thought it would get here!” Thus utterly surprised, they surrendered unconditionally. The convention was one of the most successful ever held." |

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17TH - TECH rehearsal
Final as of Monday, October 16th
Tech rehearsal is our first opportunity to test drive all the onsite lighting and sound in the dark and for new cast members to work their stuff in costume, on site, in the dark. As it typical with tech rehearsal though, the emphasis is on the tech so there may be 'hurry up and wait' times. The following schedule is subject to change.
6:00 pm call for all cast members scheduled to participate in tech rehearsal.
6:30 pm: General group meeting
6:45 pm: On site characters to places
7:00 pm first tour steps off - then every 10 minutes per the schedule below*
9:00 pm or so / after final tour has returned - all guides plus Kitty Linehan (Dawn Molly Dewane) will walk the changed section of the daytime tour route

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19th - daytime tours
BUSES! The youth will be arriving in buses that will pull straight up to the Victorian Gardens to offload. They will arrive at staggered times so just have a care when making your way to start your tour.
At the end of your tour, send them to the chapel instead of crossing across the grass and graves back to the Victorian Gardens.
At the end of your tour, send them to the chapel instead of crossing across the grass and graves back to the Victorian Gardens.
YOUR AUDIENCE:
Each tour will have up to 25 youth from the Boys and Girls Club and will be accompanied by two or three chaperones. GOAL: The daytime need to come in at 60 minutes or under vs our standard 70-75 minutes. To accomplish this, we've taken the following steps... SHORTER ROUTE and FEWER CHARACTERS: The route skips directly from Victorian Gardens to Increase Lapham bypassing everything from the Newhall monument to Dr Laura Ross Wolcott. At the end, instead of returning to Victorian Gardens, groups will return to the chapel. Guides can hop out if they like and the chaperones can accompany them the rest of the way. |
SHIFTING A COUPLE OF CHARACTERS:
We're re-locating Kitty Linehan (from Newhall monument) and the guides' first stop. ABBREVIATED INTERACTIONS: The audience for these daytime tours are inner city youth ages 10 to 15 or so. As Ron mentioned via phone on Sunday evening, your standard presentation needs to be abridged for shorter attention spans and to get tours in on time. The general rule is "less talking / more moving". AFTER DAYS AND BEFORE NIGHTS: Daytime tours should be finished by 5:00 pm and evening tours start at 6:00 pm. On site characters must be in place by 5:45 pm but that still leaves time to get back to the HofH, grab some food and a cushy sit-down and head back out. |
BULLETINS AS THEY HAPPEN and have a blast with the kids! They're really excited to be able to do this and it's a gift from our hearts to theirs!
Note: This is only for the daytime tours on Thursday and Friday. Evening tours for all four event days are the same, regular route and will be marked with hanging lanterns.

These prep tasks are on the master checklist document in order of importance. Start at the top of your list and check the items off as you accomplish them. They are written in general terms for everyone. If your specifics diverge from this general guidance and you and Susan have already agreed, that’s still the case.
Stuck? Don’t get hung up on a list. It’s here to help but not to hinder. Again, it’s not a rite of passage. Email or call SUSAN and she will help you cut through the haze and facilitate what’s next.

A VARIETY OF BITS AND PIECES OF INFO THAT IT'S HANDY TO HAVE

On site characters must be in place 15 minutes before the first tour steps off.

everyone - where are our dressing rooms?
Dressing rooms and space to store personal belongings is in the Halls of History, located on the right just past the main office. Look for the building with the covered portico.
Our parking area in the maintenance lot is also on the back side of the HofH and there is a door from that lot into the building. That will be our access door.
You're welcome to bring any items you like on hand when you're prepping and leave them there during the show. We don't assume responsibility for your personal items but the doors will be locked at all times.

guides - when are the tours and how frequently do they go out?
Thursday and Friday, the first tour steps off at 3:00 pm*. Saturday and Sunday, the first tour steps off at 6:00 pm.
Tours step off every 15 minutes so on site characters can expect to see another group every 15 minutes. If a group is running fast or slow, one of our on site stage managers will try to get them back on track.
* Not everyone is called for these daytime tours. Check the schedule of availability to see if Susan plans to schedule you.

guides - where do i start?
Susan will be calling the show from the black tent by the Victorian Gardens. Five minutes before your first tour, she will radio the Halls of History to send you out. Take your lantern and check in at the tent. At your tour time, Susan will send you in to be introduced by your host and to pick up your tour group.
Note: If you prefer to mingle with the guests prior to the tour, you are welcome to do so after you check in at the black tent. Pay attention to what's going on around you so you are ready when it's time to be introduced to your specific tour group.
At the start of your tour time, you'll gather on the end of the gardens near the arbor, be introduced by Lydia Docenia Ely and lead your guests from there.
PLEASE ALWAYS CHECK IN AT THE BLACK TENT FIRST. Susan is calling the show from there and will not release the tour to begin unless she knows you're in place.

guides - finding the tour route
The route will be marked with lanterns on shepherd's crooks. The route is about 1 mile long, exits the Victorian Gardens, takes you around the cemetery and re-enters / ends at Victorian Gardens from the opposite side.
You will have to remember two things in addition to following the lanterns.
1. After your first stop at Newhall, you double back to pick up the route.
2. Lapham, Civil War tableau and Gillespie are all on the same road. Stay to the right to visit Lapham first, tableau second and then double back to visit Gillespie. This is your other 'out and bacl'.

ETHOS
Spirits of the Silent City is a collaborative creation. Unlike some creative endeavors however, the onus is on you, the actor, to pro-actively check everything off your list – to co-craft your script – to initiate scheduling your rehearsals – and all that jazz.
That said, you have lots of support. Your crew and fellow cast members are here for you. Seriously. This is not a rite of passage. You will succeed and be glorious. It's also not that hard if you just take each to-do one at a time.

MENTORS
There’s nothing like first-hand experience. If you’re interested in teaming up with an SotSC 2022 cast member as a mentor, chime in. SUSAN will be happy to make the connections.

- Have someone else take responsibility for your checklist and hound you every step of the way? Oh dear. Not going to happen.

MORE ABOUT WHAT YOUR STAGE MANAGERS CAN AND DO DO FOR YOU
KEEP THE TOURS RUNNING ON TIME AND TO SPEED
Each stage manager and tech person monitors when each group arrives and leaves all 12 on site locations. If there is any chance one group will lap the one in front of it, they will slow you down. Or speed you up. We're working on best ways to convey 'speed up' and 'slow down' messages to guides.
ACTOR TRANSPORTATION
If you need a little golf cart boost to get you to your on site location, connect with Este. She will see how we can work it.

Creating your script is a collaborative process.
- Research your character. Pay attention to aspects of their lives that are ‘sticky’ to you. Those may become your unfinished business.
- Schedule time with RON. Phone, zoom, in person.
- Ron will create a script based on your conversation and email it to you.
- As soon as you receive your email, schedule your next conversation with Ron.
- Note: Your final script will be crafted so you can memorize it as is. It can also be a jumping off point for you to improv or craft your actual interactions based on your guest’s experiences. It’s up to you and your improv skills.
- Learn your script. Learn your dates, numbers and specific talking points.
Schedule (at least) THREE one-on-one, on-site rehearsals on Saturdays or Sundays between September 16th and October 14th with RON
4. Finally, you’ll rehearse on your feet, in costume, in front of guests at Tech Rehearsal on Tuesday, October 17th and Final Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, October 18th. Times TBD.
- First Rehearsal: Work your script with Ron at your on site location (on site characters) or at each of your stops (guides)
- Second Rehearsal: Work your script on your own. You’re welcome to go to Forest Home any time during business hours or let Ron know when if you’d like to work it with him again.
- Third Rehearsal: Work once more with Ron on site.

In addition to getting to know your personal historical character, everyone will interact with other characters. To create authentic connections, you need to learn who they are.
This may be a challenge to accomplish since Tech Rehearsal on Tuesday, October 17th and Final Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, October 18th may be the first time you will meet many of your fellows in person. To help bridge this, familiarize yourself with the resources we have online in your cast portal page.

We will costume you. Connect with DEB to discuss your character and provide measurements.
A couple considerations....
You may work with Deb on items you’d like to incorporate but do not costume yourself. Anything you wear needs her final approval.
It can get very cold and you may be outdoors for hours. Deb will design your costume to be layered for warmth. If you aren't warm enough, ask Deb about long johns. We might be able to get some for you.

REHEARSALS: You're welcome to park anywhere along the road near the Halls of History BUT it would be great if you could park in the maintenance lot on weekends.
SHOW NIGHTS: On show nights, all cast and crew park in the Forest Home maintenance yard lot located of the west side of the Halls of History. THIS IS A DIFFERENT PARKING AREA THAN 2022.
Getting to our SHOW NIGHT parking lot:
Drive in the cemetery side gate on Forest Home Avenue, make your first / immediate left and drive in to the maintenance lot. That's us.
If you drive in the main gate on Lincoln Avenue, drive past the Halls of History and make your first right hand turn. That will also take you to the maintenance lot.
RAINY WEATHER. If it's rainy, the back door entrance to the Halls of History might be too yucky to squish across. Please walk around to the front of the Halls of History.
PARKING UPDATE EFFECTIVE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18TH:
It's a combo of timing and access to your vehicles.
ARRIVING:
We are all supposed to park behind the Halls of History. Which means you will be parking on the actual grounds / within the fenced property.
If you arrive by 5:30, that works just fine. If you arrive after 5:30, the side gate on Forest Home Avenue will be closed by 5:30. This should only apply to guides.
Options:
1. Enter the main Forest Home Cemetery gate on Lincoln Avenue and immediately to your right is a fence with a drive in opening. That's office staff parking. On tour nights, that will also be guest paid parking. Park there and walk in.
If you want this option, you'll need to display a PARKING sheet in your car window or FH staff will try to charge you to park there.
2. Park along Lincoln Avenue and walk in.
LEAVING:
Guides are able to leave after their last tour of the evening. If you're parked behind the Halls of History, you CAN'T leave until the Forest Home Avenue gates are unlocked.
Our plan is to unlock them roughly when the last tour of the night reaches Wolcott. Est about 30 minutes into the final tour of the evening. You can leave then.
OR
As described in ARRIVING, park in staff parking outside the main gate or along Lincoln Avenue.

2. I'm in process of making portal pages that are more targeted for Guides and On Site Characters. Will streamline finding all the stuff and make it way less overwhelming to scroll.
In the meantime, don't hesitate to call or email me if you can't find something quickly. Don't put up with data overload!
